Muricken Family (Kerala, India) is believed to be one of the oldest descendents
of Antiochian christian community migrated to Kerala at the St.Thomas era and
settled in Kodungallore. They carried on business. During the period Christian
persecution they left Kodungallur and came to Chertala where they acquired land
and lived there for some time. Thereafter the descendants migrated to different
parts of Kerala, Udyamperoor, Mulanthuruthy, Muttuchira etc.. The descendants at
Mulanthuruthy (Brothers and elder sons of Chacko) became Jacobites after the
Koonan Cross incident and are known as Mureekal family. The present Mureekal
family members are all well educated and leads respectable life in
Mulanthuruthy, Udayamperoor areas.
Chacko and his son, Chandy came to Muttuchira in A.D. 1667. They lived in the
house which is known as "Pazhepura tharavadu" It is here St. Alphonsa spent most
of her time till joining the convent. The house which was built in 1670 is now
in the possession of FCC Province, Pala. Pilgrims from all over the world are
visiting the house.
Chandy married from Pazhukkathara and had two sons:
1. Chacko Junior (Later known as Chacko Tharakan) married from Thuruthel family
and
2. Mathai. (later known as Mathai Tharakan). They were very popular and were
actively involved in the development of the area. Hence the Vadakumcore Raja
honoured them by giving the “Tharakan” Status. Chacko Tharakan lived in the old
house. Mathai Tharakan shifted to a new house, “Kizhake Kala Parambu”, adjacent
to the old house.
The sons and grandsons of Chacko Tharakan constitute the five branches:
PAZHEPURA,
PUTHENPURA,
PAZHEKALA,
CHANDITHURUTHEL,
KARAMEL branches of
Muricken Family.
The sons & grand sons of Mathai Tharakan (brother of Chacko Tharaken) formed the
NEERAKAL,
AROOKUZHUPPIL,
KAKKATTIL,
ELAMPUNCHAYIL
branches.
It is our greatest honour to request blessings from our own St.Alphonsamma, who
had been brought up by our great grand parents Muricken Pailochen & Annamma
[Pazhepura Branch] of Muricken Family.
